Garcia Now Accepting Submissions For Annual Arts Competition

Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, announced Monday that he is accepting student artwork submissions for the annual Congressional Art Competition.

The yearly Congressional Arts Competition is now accepting new submissions as of Monday, March 15, according to officials from Garcia’s office.

“I am excited to announce the commencement of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition,” Garcia said in a statement Monday. “This is my first time hosting this competition as a Member of Congress and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see what the creative students from California’s 25th District come up with.”

Students in high schools across the 25th Congressional District are invited to submit new artwork to the congressman’s office for consideration.

The mediums accepted for competition artwork are included below:

  • Paintings such as oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Drawings, including colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
  • Collages, which must be two-dimensional
  • Prints such as lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Mixed Media, including use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
  • Computer-generated art
  • Photography

For high school students in the district wishing to submit artwork to be considered, visit this page to move forward.

“The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents,” reads the art competition’s submission page. “Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.”

Entries are encouraged by Garcia’s office to be original in concept, design, and execution.

Students wishing to enter the competition are also reminded on the submission page that any submission “that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.”
