There are lots of inaccuracies floating around that can put you off becoming one so let’s start clearing up some of the misconceptions and false facts you may have heard over the years, and then you will be able to see the benefits of becoming a Freemason, and how this opportunity could change your life, for the better. Being a Freemason ensures that you are the best that you can be as men of faith, husbands, brothers and employees. As a freemason, you not only strive to meet high standards today but also to strive to be better tomorrow than you are today.
Freemasonry is a fraternity that uses self-improvement tools that are neutral both religiously and politically, so they are suitable for everyone to use. As a Freemason you need to be attentive to the world around you, you need to be constantly asking yourself what you are doing, who you are helping and what your purpose is you will face constant reminders in reference to the Volume of Sacred Law.
Being Part Of A Community
Having that sense of togetherness and community is vital when you are pushing and striving to be the best you can be, getting to know other Freemasons, possibly from locations all over the country, or all over the world. The sense of community and feeling of community is something that cannot be underestimated and is just one of the benefits of being a Freemason – meeting others and getting to know new people will open your eyes and give you the chance to feel that community relationship in real life and person. Being part of a community will help you improve yourself and help you to help others too.
Continuous Education
As a freemason, you will be constantly learning. Learning how to be a better person, learning how to be a better parent, a better employee etc. Learning will never cease and you will be learning through a variety of mediums from returning to school, to reading books, to working your job, to learning off other Freemasons. It is important to see education as an ongoing process, similar to the ongoing process you will be undertaking every day to become a better version of yourself.
Leadership Skills
As a freemason you will develop the skills needed to be an effective and natural leader, there are lots of opportunities to improve your leadership qualities and skills both internally and externally. There will be opportunities to step up and improve how you lead others, whether this is co-ordinating external projects and drives or being part of an internal committee.
Self-Improvement
Even though you are part of something bigger there are plenty of opportunities to work on how to be the best version of yourself that you can be. It is important to focus on continuous self- improvement, you can learn from others how to improve yourself and your behavior and become a model freemason watching and learning from others including mentors.
Mentorship
Members range in age and you will always find there is something you can learn and draw upon from the huge pool of experience and wealth that is altogether in one safe and secure place. Masons are there for one another and you will never struggle to find someone to reach out to and seek advice or guidance from and this is one of the benefits of mentoring. Mentors are not necessarily older which can be beneficial. Mentors share valuable advice and guidance that will be of benefit and over the next years, you will then be in the position to pass on the great advice you were given.
Charity To Others – Providing Relief
Providing charity or relief is one of the three tenets of Freemasonry. It is a chance to help others whether they are Freemasons or not. As a Freemason, you need to understand that you are now of service to fellowmen from any background. When you join the brotherhood and become a freemason you open yourself up to new opportunities to serve others and this is something that you should embrace. Serving others makes you a better person. It is a selfless act and you can help others physically by sharing your skills, time, and experience. Or you could assist financially in terms of fundraising for local good causes, or, creating your own causes within your lodge.
Freemasons are constantly learning and teaching and this is one of the best things about joining. The brotherhood you join will change your life for the better. Sharing and being actively involved within your lodge will improve your life all around which is what everyone should be striving for.
Brotherhood – Family
Usually, after undertaking your first Masonic obligation, you will be entered apprentice, however, some lodges call them brother. This title is of course not given lightly and when an individual petitions to join a Masonic lodge, an investigation will then take place.This investigation applies to those who want to become Masons as well as those who may have already become Masons somewhere else. Freemasons rightly hold each other in high regard, you place a lot of brotherly trust in other Masons and they place the same in you. As part of your lodge, you will most like see them as extended family and as such you will treat them with the same respect.
Becoming a Freemason, should not be seen as a networking opportunity, or a chance to further your career as this is not what it is about. Freemasons are one of the oldest fraternal organizations and as such attract a lot of interest, knowledge and experience from a large group of individuals. Being a Freemason will help you live a positive and fulfilling life. As a Freemason you will never be alone, even if you are not near to your lodge you can always reach out and seek assistance from other Freemasons.
