L.A. County Daily COVID-19 Hospitalization Rate Drops Over 40% Since Start Of 2021

Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) announced Monday that the average daily hospitalization rate for COVID-19 in the county had dropped by over 40% since the beginning of January.

On Monday, LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer announced that the average daily COVID-19 hospitalization rate for the county stood at 4,608 on Friday, representing a 42% decline since the start of 2021.

“It’s also encouraging to see these numbers go down and we’re grateful to everyone who’s careful actions are making (the decrease) possible,” Ferrer said. “However, our hospitals are still very crowded and they still have limited ICU capacity.”

As of Monday, there were 4,186 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 29 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Ferrer noted that this decrease is important for more than COVID-19 patients, as fewer coronavirus hospitalizations would mean more free resources to accommodate other types of medical needs and procedures that are currently being delayed.

An additional 2,741 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Monday, along with 93 deaths, according to the LADPH.

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 1,149,064 positive cases of COVID-19 and 18,135 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

Testing results are available for over 5,600,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

The Southern California Region has 9.1% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of the state’s last update on Tuesday, Feb. 2, according to state health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.

On Sunday, 77 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 23,978 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since March of 2020, according to the LADPH. These cases include:
