Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, co-sponsored a bill which would change laws affecting those who have been victims of crimes in sanctuary cities, such as Los Angeles, holding these cities responsible for certain actions.
The upcoming bill, co-sponsored by Garcia and labeled the “Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act,” was crafted to address crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities and the public’s abilities to respond to these crimes on a larger scale.
“We must uphold law and order in our cities and communities,” Garcia said in a statement issued Monday. “Cities that refuse to uphold the law should be held accountable for their inactions.”
The proposed bill would allow victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities to sue these cities if they had not honored a lawful immigration detainer request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“Refusing to honor DHS’s detainer requests has dire consequences,” Garcia said. “We need to make public safety a priority and releasing dangerous criminals back into our communities does the opposite.”
This new bill marks a continued pattern of government officials in Santa Clarita taking actions against illegal immigration as a response to the recent rise in sanctuary cities across the state as well as the country.
In 2018, the Santa Clarita City Council voted unanimously to oppose SB 54, California’s “Sanctuary State” law, and Garcia’s new bill addresses immigration concerns with a similarly critical set of actions.
“The Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act will improve public safety and hold sanctuary cities accountable for the danger they impose on our communities,” Garcia said.
