L.A. County Surpasses 16,000 Cumulative COVID-19 Deaths

Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) reported Thursday that the county has surpassed 16,000 cumulative COVID-19 deaths.

An additional 6,592 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Thursday, along with 213 deaths, according to the LADPH.

The new cases reported today bring the county’s cumulative total to 1,097,941 positive cases of COVID-19 and 16,107 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

To continue to drive down transmission, we all must commit to taking the actions that work to slow COVID-19 spread,” said LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer in a statement Thursday. “When more sectors re-open the risk of COVID-19 transmission increases, because people are interacting more with non-household members. In order to avoid re-openings resulting in increases in cases, businesses and individuals need to be more diligent, not less, in following public health measures.”

As of Thursday, there were 6,026 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 26 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

We have a way to go before our hospitals are not stressed and fewer people die each day,” Ferrer said. “Staying on a recovery journey is only possible if we all play by the rules.”

Testing results are available for over 5,446,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

According to California health officials, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Thursday.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.
