Community Blood Drive Arranged In Honor Of Valencia High Teenager

The Houchin Community Blood Bank (HCBB) is set to host a blood drive in honor of Pedro Roman, a 17-year old Valencia High School student who recently entered remission after battling leukemia.

The blood drive is scheduled to be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 20870 Centre Pointe Parkway from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and all donors are set to receive a bag of cookies from Salt Sugar Flour Bakery.

“It breaks our hearts to see other families suffer as we have,” said Pedro’s mother, Lisa Marcotte. “Pedro and I feel the same. We just want to save lives.”

Pedro was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia back in September of 2019, and a GoFundMe was set up by a family friend to help fund his medical bills. After one long and hard-fought year, Pedro is now in remission due to the success of his latest treatment.

During his route to recovery, he received over 100 blood transfusions that helped him gain the strength to keep on fighting.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. requires a life-saving blood transfusion, and each donated unit of whole blood can save up to three lives. Just like Pedro, there are people in our community that need blood transfusions.

The HCBB is a mobile-based community blood bank dedicated to serving Santa Clarita and the surrounding communities. Their mission is to save lives by providing blood, plasma, and platelets to local hospitals through operating convenient, mobile blood drives.

Appointments are required for this drive. To schedule an appointment, Santa Clarita residents are asked to visit HCBB’S website here or contact Synthia Rocha, Account Manager of HCBB, at srocha@hcbb.com or at (661) 331-1313.
