L.A. County Cumulative COVID-19 Cases Top 800,000

Los Angeles County surpassed a cumulative total of 800,000 COVID-19 cases on Saturday in the wake of the holiday season.

An additional 15,701 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Saturday, along with 138 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 806,210 positive cases of COVID-19 and 10,682 deaths since March.

Public Health confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in L.A. County on January 26, 2020. Ten months later, on November 30, L.A. County reached 400,000 COVID-19 cases.

“In just over a month, we confirmed an additional 400,000 cases. This is the fastest acceleration of new cases than at any other time during the pandemic,” reads Saturday’s press release.

As of Saturday, there were 7,627 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 21% of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“The strategy for stopping the surge is fairly straightforward. When people stay away from other people, the virus cannot spread as it is doing now. The more we stay home and the more we avoid in-person activities with other people we don’t live with, the more we reduce the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of public health. “While health officer orders create the framework for protecting each other, it is our actions that stop people from being hospitalized and dying. When we follow the public health safety directives with intention, we avoid getting and transmitting COVID-19; this is how we stop the surge.”

Testing results are available for nearly 4,760,000 individuals with 16% of people testing positive.

According to California health officials, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Saturday.

Health officials say that at its current rate, one person in Los Angeles County dies of COVID-19 every 10 minutes.
