Over 13,500 New L.A. County COVID-19 Cases, 44 Deaths Sunday

Over 13,500 new COVID-19 cases, along with over 40 new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Los Angeles County Sunday, only a day before the California stay-at-home order was set to expire.

An additional 13,580 coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Sunday, along with 44 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The additional cases reported Sunday bring the county’s cumulative total to 719,833 along with a total of 9,482 deaths since March, according to the department.

As of Sunday, there were 6,815 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 20 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to the State, as of Sunday, Dec. 27, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining.

Health officials say that at its current rate, one person in Los Angeles County dies of COVID-19 every 10 minutes, as of Saturday afternoon.

“Many of these tragic deaths stemming from COVID-19 were preventable,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda Solis in a statement Saturday. “Our collective focus should be on taking all steps necessary to reduce transmission of this virus.”

On Sunday, 214 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 15,419 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since testing began in March, according to the LADPH.

These cases include:

  • 11,075 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+172)
  • 464 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+14)
  • 2,854 in Castaic* (+14)
  • 77 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 569 in Stevenson Ranch (+12)

In nearby Acton, there have been 248 (+7) cumulative cases, as well as 120 (+1) cases in Agua Dulce.

*As of Saturday, Dec. 26, public health officials have recorded 1,956 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,425 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

The larger numbers are due in part to a service outage that the LADPH experienced Friday, resulting in officials reporting two days-worth of new COVID-19 cases and deaths on Saturday.

As of Sunday, Dec. 27, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital had conducted 14,976 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 2,316 had tested positive, and five tests were still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There were 92 patients in the hospital as of Sunday, Dec. 27, while 633 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

Two additional deaths were reported Sunday, with the number of COVID-19 patients more than doubling over the past month.

There have been a total of 67 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 105 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley.
