L.A. District Attorney Cautions Residents To Avoid Charity Scams

With the season of giving here, so too is the “season of scams,” as officials with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s (LADA) Office warn that con artists can establish charity scams that give the illusion of donating to a charitable cause.

The LADA’s office warned L.A. County residents, including those in Santa Clarita, against these types of scams, providing tips on how to avoid them.

Charity scams are notably created following a natural disaster or during the holidays, as these are times in which people are most likely to contribute to organizations in an effort to aid or in the spirit of giving.

According to the LADA, scammers will often create fake, but legitimate-looking charities to encourage people to donate, only to keep the money for themselves. While a donator may think their monetary donation has been put to a good cause, it has really been put into the pockets of scammers.

To avoid falling into charity scams, the District Attorney’s Office advises people to do research before donating to a charity.

“Reputable charities will often reveal how much money is spent and if donations are tax-deductible,” said Benyomin Forer, a deputy district attorney.

Officials also advise against picking up or responding to phone calls or emails asking for contributions or money of any kind. Emails or cold calls such as this could be scammers attempting to get a donation out of those who answer.

Finally, making donations in cash is strongly discouraged, as transactions in cash are often not recorded.
