L.A. County Surpasses 600,000 Total COVID-19 Cases


More than 600,000 total COVID-19 cases have been reported in Los Angeles County since testing began in March, with nearly 100,000 cases being reported in the past week alone.

There are 5,423 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Saturday, 21 percent of which are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

L.A. County is experiencing the fastest acceleration of new cases than at any other time during the pandemic,” reads a statement issued by public health officials Saturday.

An additional 13,756 coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Saturday, along with 60 deaths, according to Public Health.

The additional cases reported Saturday bring the county’s cumulative total to 610,372, along with a total of 8,817 deaths since March, according to the department.

The State stay-at-home order went into effect at midnight on Dec. 6, and remains in effect for at least three weeks in California regions where ICU capacity falls below 15%.

According to the State, as of Saturday, Dec. 19, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining.

On Saturday, 238 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 13,248 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since testing began in March, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH). These cases include:

  • 9,300 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+207)
  • 390 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+6)
  • 2,681 in Castaic* (+6)
  • 61 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus (+1)
  • 477 in Stevenson Ranch (+12)
  • 87 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia (+1)
  • 148 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde (+4)
  • 51 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall 
  • 20 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon (+1)
  • 21 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country (+3)
  • Eight in unincorporated Sand Canyon
  • Four in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon

In nearby Acton, there have been 202 (+8) cumulative cases, as well as 98 (+2) cases in Agua Dulce.

*As of Thursday, Dec. 17, public health officials have recorded 1,939 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,410 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

As of Friday, Dec. 18, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 14,110 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 1,936 have tested positive, and 24 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Moody.

There are 79 patients in the hospital as of Friday, Dec. 18, while 538 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

10 additional deaths have been reported this week, with the number of COVID-19 patients more than doubling over the past month.

There have been a total of 57 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 95 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley.
