Garcia Votes In Favor Of $900 Billion COVID-19 Relief Package

Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, voted in favor of the $900 billion COVID-19 relief package Monday night, stating that it “should have been done in September.”

On Monday, Garcia voted in favor of a $900 billion COVID-19 relief package after back-and-forth negotiations between House Democrats and Senate Republicans.

“After months of unnecessary and frustrating partisan bickering, the House has finally passed a long-overdue COVID-19 relief package,” Garcia said in a statement Monday evening. “This should have been done in September.”

The stimulus deal is one of the largest relief packages in modern American history, although it is less than half the size of the $2.2 trillion package passed near the beginning of the pandemic in March.

“While this bill isn’t perfect, it funnels resources where they are most needed without the unnecessary spending found in Pelosi’s $3 (trillion) COVID-19 relief proposals,” Garcia said. “As a fiscal conservative the size of this bill is staggering. But in the end, it is needed and may still not be enough for some small businesses and individuals who are suffering.”

Garccia added that he is “committed to passing a balance budget amendment in future years so we can pay off this crippling debt,” referring to the national debt as “one of the largest threats to our nation’s security.”

The package itself provides various forms of relief for small businesses and families, including $600 direct payments to each individual American.

“To those who have lost loved ones this year, lost their businesses, lost their livelihoods and their jobs, you have my deepest prayers and concerns and this bill is only a small solace,” Garcia said. “But this, in conjunction with the 100 million doses of the vaccine before the end of February, are the lifeline and bridge to the other side of this mess.”A full summary of the package can be found here.
