7 Great Places You Should Visit With A Campervan

It is not just about the destination, but also the journey. Traveling in a campervan is nothing short of an adventure, one that allows you to choose and follow your own route without having to stick to the usual itineraries. Yes, traveling in a campervan has its own challenges, and the first time you plan a trip, it might be a little overwhelming. But at the same time, it offers you the flexibility of traveling when you want and where you want. You don’t have to worry about booking flights or looking for a place to stay. Be it the mountains or the seaside, if you wish to enjoy the journey, there is no better way of traveling, than in a campervan. Whether you are traveling with friends or family, here are 7 great places that you should visit with a campervan.

1- Amalfi Coast and Tuscany, Italy

There are so many places in Italy to travel to, that you would be spoilt for choices and you’ll be planning for your next trip even before the first one gets over. With numerous campsites scattered around the country, you can easily pick out your own route and there is something on the card for every season. You could drive down the Amalfi coast through the winding roads and visit Positano, Sorrento, and Pompei. Don’t forget to get a ‘Pizza Margarita’ at the very Pizzeria where it was invented, Pizzeria Brandi, in Napoli.

You could also drive down Tuscany. Very few road trips can compare to a road trip through Tuscany. You could visit the historic city of Florence followed by Lucca on your way to Milan. That said, if feeling adventurous, you could also drive up to the Dolomites.

2- Ring Road, Iceland

If you enjoy or wish to experience traveling in a campervan, Iceland should be right on top of your bucket list. Spectacular waterfalls, black sand beaches, glaciers, volcanoes, and the Northern Lights, Iceland has it all. Ring Road is the most popularly traced route in Iceland. Hold your horses, don’t start packing already! The best time to visit Iceland is during the summers, which is also the tourist season. But if you want to catch the Northern Lights in all their glory, later in the year would probably be a better time.

There are numerous campsites all across the country and you can also book packages that give you access to most of these without any hassle. Talk about convenience. In addition, if you are concerned about safety, Iceland consistently ranks as the safest place in the world.

3- Rocky Mountains, USA

The Rocky Mountains span from New Mexico to British Columbia and offer a lifetime’s worth of adventure. You can start your trip with the Rocky Mountains National Park, which experiences a footfall of 3 million visitors a year. The park is an absolute treat for wildlife enthusiasts and has over 50 lakes with various beautiful spots for fishing. You could also drive up to the Yellow Stone and the Grand Teton National Park. You could take your own camper, but renting a camper might be more convenient as the route spans across a large distance and if your RV is old, it might not withstand the long drive. The route has something different to offer every season and you could plan your trip at any time of the year. This trip could be a long one though, so do plan well in advance.

4- North Coast 500, Scotland

The North Coast 500, as the name suggests, is a 516-mile route about the northern coast of Scotland. What the name doesn’t suggest is that it brings together scenic roads, beautiful white sand beaches, historic ruins, and enchanting castles. The route starts at Inverness, takes you through John O’Groats, the northernmost point, followed by Cape Wrath and the Applecross Peninsula taking you back to Inverness.

5- Great Ocean Road, Australia

The Great Road is one of the most famous routes in Australia. It is a 250 km route that goes along the southeastern coast of Australia. Most of the route hugs the coastline. It starts at Torquay and goes all the way to Apollo Bay. You can also witness the Twelve Apostles off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park. Towards the end, the route takes you through the Otway National Park where you can also spot Koalas. Also if you like surfing, what better than the beaches of Australia.

6- La Route des Grande Alpes, France

The route takes you on a ride, all the way from Lake Geneva to Nice in the French Riviera. You get to drive through the Alps and witness the stark variation in landscape and the gradual change in the culture. It goes through passes like the Iseran, Galibier, and Bonette pass, which are amongst the highest in the Alps. Make sure to carry your cycles, for this route was made famous by the iconic Tour de France. The route is extremely photogenic and perfect for a campervan road trip. The final destination of the trip is just as remarkable as the route itself, the capital of the French Riviera. With its beautiful beaches, fantastic climate, and mouthwatering food, it would be the perfect way to end an adventurous trip.

7- New Zealand

New Zealand is another wonderful country to explore in a campervan. With ever-changing landscapes, from glaciers to majestic volcanoes, open green fields to the wind-swept beaches, you get to have a taste of everything. You could swim with dolphins and relax in hot springs or you could camp in certified dark sky reserves and appreciate the vast expanse of the night sky with zero light pollution. The majority of travelers visiting New Zealand opt to travel in campervans. There are numerous campervan sites run by the government that offer excellent facilities and beautiful routes like the Auckland to Bay of Islands Loop, Coromandel Peninsula, and the Fiordland National Park that are preferred by travelers.

VW Bus

Any of these destinations will offer you a once-in-a-lifetime experience and leave you with more stories than you could tell. The beauty of traveling in a campervan, however, is that you could just stuff a map in your pocket and head out. So if you can’t travel to one of these exotic locations, why not discover a few of your own.
