Santa Clarita City Celebrates 33 Years Since Founding

When the city was first founded in 1987, Santa Clarita was just 39 square miles and included only a fraction of the modern communities of Saugus, Newhall, Valencia and Canyon Country.

33 years later, the community has grown to include over 60 square miles and over 213,000 residents, making it the third-largest city by population in Los Angeles County, and the 18th largest city in the state of California.

“I remember being a high school student sitting in the COC gym as my dad called the first meeting to order,” said Santa Clarita City Councilman Cameron Smyth in a previous story. “I think he and all of those who founded this city would be very happy with where we are today.”

In the 33 years since its founding, Santa Clarita has invested millions of dollars into public development, enabling the city to provide new facilities, programs and services to residents, according to officials.

As of 2020, these improvements included: 35 parks, progress made on the new Sheriff’s Station and the Canyon Country Community Center, the opening of new parks and trails, and the continued improvement of the city’s transit system, along with anti-drug programs, sports and recreation programs, the Aquatic Center and Sports Complex, traffic and road improvements.

In addition, the city has faced untold sorrow and overcome incredible hardship over the past year, including the devastation caused by the Tick Fire, the Saugus High shooting, and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
