Los Angeles County Coronavirus Hospitalizations Continue To Climb To New Records

The surge in Los Angeles County coronavirus hospitalizations continues to climb as a record number of COVID-19 patients were reported once again Tuesday.

There are 4,403 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Tuesday, 21 percent of which are in the ICU, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“During this time of extraordinarily high number of cases and hospitalizations and increasing numbers of deaths, it is more important than ever that County businesses carefully follow the Public Health requirements and be fully compliant with the safeguards and modifications in the Health Officer Order and protocols,” public health officials said Tuesday.

The number of patients hospitalized has tripled over the past month, while the number of deaths has quadrupled, according to the department.

“We must all work together to prevent as many hospitalizations and deaths as possible while we wait for the COVID-19 vaccine to be widely available,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of public health. “The first vaccines were administered yesterday marking the beginning of the end of this pandemic. I ask that everyone stay strong and focus all efforts to stop the surge. We need to protect each other from this deadly virus by carefully abiding by the straight-forward safety measures and directives in the Health Officer Order. It worked before and it will work again when we all follow the rules.”

The number of hospitalizations is over twice the peak of 2,232 people hospitalized with COVID-19 during the July surge. The daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased nearly every day since Nov. 1, when the daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was 799.

An additional 11,194 coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, according to Public Health.

The additional cases reported Tuesday bring the county’s cumulative total to 543,769, according to the department.

As of Friday, the five-day average for daily new cases reported with COVID-19 is 10,284, over double the five-day average for daily new cases the county saw just over three weeks ago.

86 additional deaths were reported Tuesday, with the total deaths across the county reaching  8,431, according to the department.
