The Uncanny Relationship Between California And Norway

Norway is a Northern European country and is part of the Scandinavian region, sharing boundaries with Finland and Sweden in the northwest region and east respectively. With a population of over 5.3 million people, Norway is considered as one of the most financially stable economies worldwide and is one of the largest exporters of crude oil in the world, and ranked 11th in that category. Norway was greatly impacted by the American Revolution of 1777, with the United States Constitution and ideals for democracy adopted as a model in the Norwegian Constitution of 1814. The huge number of Norwegians immigrating to the United States between 1825 to 1940 reinforced the relationship between the two nations. It was reported that an estimation of 850,000 people from Norway moved to the US and also helped in its development.

The relationship between Norway and the United States spans through strong trade and an overall economic relationship. One of Norway’s biggest export markets in the United States and both states do a lot of productive investment.

Economic connections

Over $257 million was exported to Norway from California in 2019. The goods on the top of the list of these exports were agricultural products, transportation equipment, electrical products, and computers. Norway on the other hand exported products to California worth $438.8 million, with top products including chemicals, transportation equipment, fresh or frozen fish, and other marine products, and other animals.

The direct investment of the US to Norway was $27.9 billion, while Norway directly invested $28.4 billion in 2018. About 6,800 jobs in the US are supported by Norwegian FDI and contribute over $43 million to development and research, together with expanded US exports reaching $904 billion. These Norwegian FDI industries included IT services and Software, metals, transportation, industrial equipment, chemicals, and business services.

This is more so in the relationship between California and Oslo as many Fiat 500es were exported from California and stacked up in front of a dealership, which is currently part of Norway’s global flow of pre-owned electric cars.

This is one thing that the US state and the country, Norway have in common. Starting from policies and political affiliation to the values and cultural connections, there are dozens of Norwegian communities living in California nowadays, with a lot of them lined in districts. Another important thing to note is that the State of Washington has a bunch of Norwegians living there, especially in the city of Seattle. However, during the 20th century, many folks from Seattle started moving to cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other smaller towns like Santa Clarita for example for better work opportunities.

Tapping into a new market

Nowadays, Norwegian companies manage to find quite a large client base in California due to this cultural affiliation. This is especially the case for wagering companies as many of them are restricted to offer it to Norwegians in Norway, but due to a bit more complex legal system in the US, they manage to get through to Norwegian clients. According to analysts at

NyeCasino.ninja, many Norwegians living in California who didn’t have the opportunity to participate in online betting because of the restrictions in Norway now have access to the platform.

The business sector of Norway has very strong ties with the US. California, Texas, and New York are especially very important to Norway in this regard. With Houston having over 1550 popular Norwegian companies. It is no news that New York is one of the world’s financial centers and has also been a huge center of interest for Norwegians for over 100 years.

There is a Norway California Business Association, previously known as the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce California, which is an organization that commemorates 25 years of business service between Norway and the United States, especially California. The community’s focus is the business relationship between Norway and California, which is made up of companies, business leaders, Scandinavian activists, and elected officials. With members representing industries in California such as Technology, Entertainment, Aerospace, Maritime, and Manufacturing. The mission of this community is to foster the growth of business between Norway and California. Members of the organization have access to opportunities to establish relationships with Norwegian business professionals or those with Norwegian ties, and to the Norwegian-American business arena.

This relationship between Norway is more so as there is a whole populated district in El Dorado County, California named Little Norway, which was established in 1961, that started out as a post office and slowly became a place of interest for Norwegians and Californians alike.
