Deputies To Host Virtual ‘Java With The J-Team’ To Discuss Recent Drug Trends

Santa Clarita Juvenile Team (J-Team) deputies are expected to host another virtual “Java with the J-Team” event Thursday morning to discuss the current drug trends and resources available for young adults.

Deputies are expected to host a virtual Java with the J-Team event on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. on the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Facebook page, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

J-Team deputies are set to discuss the current trends that they are seeing regarding drug use by young people in the Santa Clarita Valley, answer questions from the public in regards to drugs and drug use, and provide resources available to those suffering from drug addiction, according to officials.

“Oftentimes, parents want to know what kind of drugs their kids are being exposed to, the kind of drugs we’re currently seeing in Santa Clarita and how can they recognize the signs that someone may be using drugs in their family,” said J-Team Sgt. Erika Gooseberry in a previous Java with the J-Team event. “We want to do our best to educate the public so they can keep their families safe.”

The virtual meeting comes at a time where Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies have seen a rise in fentanyl overdoses.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Stations’s J-Team works “to break the cycle of drug abuse, which involves much more than traditional law enforcement,” according to officials.

The team’s outreach is not limited to strictly juvenile narcotic offenders, with help extended to young adults who are struggling with drug addiction as well, according to officials.

The J-Team detectives follow-up with young adults who have been arrested on narcotic charges, with the mission of offering help and resources to them and their family members, aiding in the fight against addiction.

For Santa Clarita residents who may have questions for J-Team deputies can email questions ahead of time to JTeamSCV@lasd.org or type in questions during Thursday’s live broadcast.
