California Highway Patrol (CHP) began a year-long campaign against speeding, illegal street racing and other unsafe driving practices on October 1, 2020.
“Speed, illegal street racing, sideshows and highway takeovers, some of the main causes of traffic collisions in California, will be the focus of a year-long education and enforcement campaign by the CHP that started October 1, 2020,” according to a press release.
With the support of a federal traffic safety grant, titled Communities Against Racing and Sideshows (C.A.R.S.), the CHP will educate motorists about the dangers of street racing and sideshows through focused enforcement.

In addition to the focused enforcement, the CHP has planned outreach events for traffic safety and teen education.
The primary goal of the grant is to reduce the number of fatal and injury traffic crashes where speed is the primary factor, and to effectively educate the public on the dangers of street racing and sideshows, according to the release.
“Speed is the number one cause of traffic crashes in California, and combined with aggressive driving, contributes a significant portion of serious crashes in California,” reads the CHP release. “In the federal fiscal year 2017 to 2018, speed was a factor in approximately 31 percent of all fatal and injury crashes in the state.”
