Forgery Suspect In Custody After Attempting To Cash Stolen Checks

A forgery suspect was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly stole checks from his roommate and tried to cash them at the bank at the same time that his roommate was there, officials said.

On Wednesday, around 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to a forgery call at the Chase Bank on the 16500 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Upon arrival, deputies learned (that) on Tuesday… at approximately 6 p.m., the victim was at his place of residence when he was unable to locate his checkbook,” Arriaga said.

The victim asked the suspect, his roommate, if he had seen the checkbook, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“The suspect returned the checkbook from his person to the victim,” Arriaga said. “The victim examined the checkbook and was unable to locate six checks from the checkbook.”

The victim questioned his roommate about the missing checks, prompting the suspect to return three of the missing checks back to the victim. However, he claimed not to know the whereabouts of the three remaining checks, according to Arriaga.

The next day, while the victim was at the bank, he saw his roommate walk in and attempt to cash a check.

“A teller working the bank was also alarmed of the suspicious transaction and contacted the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station,” Arriaga said.

Thomas Wooley, 25, from Santa Clarita, was arrested at the time of the incident and booked for felony forgery, Arriaga added.

Wooley was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with bail set at $20,000, according to arrest records.
